Phil's Dream comes through in New Providence

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Phil’s Dream, last year’s Canadian champion sprinter, justified his favoritism with a 1 3/4-length victory in the $125,000 New Providence Stakes on a holiday Monday at Woodbine.
Phil’s Dream raced in fourth on the backstretch under Justin Stein, as Jenna’s Wabbit set moderate fractions in the six-furlong dash for Ontario-sired runners. Phil’s Dream commenced a rail rally exiting the turn, and then hit the front nearing the eighth pole before drawing clear to prevail in 1:09.25.
“I wasn’t too concerned about our (inside) trip,” Stein said. “I was more concerned about the pace up front. He’s a really easy horse to ride. He rates well.”
Sorry About That edged out last year’s New Providence winner, Paso Doble, for second. Sniper finished another head back in fourth in the seven-horse field.
Phil’s Dream ($3.30) collected $75,000 for Buttigieg Training Center and trainer Paul Buttigieg, who may look to stretch the 6-year-old gelding out on the grass soon.
