Philanthropist, sire of Pender Harbour, sold to South African interests

Ontario stallion Philanthropist, sire of champion Pender Harbour from his first crop of foals, has been sold to Drakenstein Stud in Cape Town, South Africa. The 11-year-old son of Kris S. had been standing at Gardiner Farms in Caledon East, Ontario, as property of a partnership since he stood his first season in 2007.

The deal was made between Philanthropist’s syndicate manager Paradox Farm Inc. (founded by the late Mike Colterjohn and his wife Moira Gunn), farm manager Sherry MacLean and Drakenstein Stud. The deal was brokered by bloodstock agents Richard Hogan, in Ontario, and Joe Brocklebank of New York.

Philanthropist was the second leading freshman sire in Canada in 2010 and the third leading sire in the country in 2011 with progeny earnings of $2.6 million. Pender Harbour, last year’s champion 3-year-old colt in Canada, won two-thirds of the Canadian Triple Crown and is already a stakes winner as a 4-year-old in 2012. Philanthropist also sired Sovereign Award finalist Bear It’s Time, a top 3-year-old filly of last year.

Philanthropist, a Grade 3 stakes winner, joins another former North American sire, Trippi, at Drakenstein Stud, which is owned by Mrs. Gaynor Rupert.
