SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Impressive debut winners Be Your Best and Lady Jasmine, as well as the maiden Idea Generation, head a field of eight juvenile fillies scheduled to run 1 1/16 miles on turf in Thursday’s $150,000 P.G. Johnson Stakes at Saratoga. Be Your Best, an Irish-bred daughter of Muhaarar, overcame a wide trip to win her July 31 debut by 3 1/4 lengths under Jose Ortiz. The only horse out of that race to come back and race was Candle, who finished fifth on July 31 and sixth in a maiden race on Sunday. “She was training very well, she seemed to be pretty fit and competitive in the morning and we felt if she had it in her, she’d be able to make the run that she did,” said Horacio De Paz, who trains Be Your Best for owner Michael Ryan. Jose Ortiz rides Be Your Best from post 6. De Paz said Be Your Best has come back to train well and he anticipates her taking a step forward off that debut performance. Lady Jasmine beat New York-breds in her debut here Aug. 3, getting a nice stalking trip under John Velazquez. :: Visit the Saratoga Handicapping Store for Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Picks, Betting Strategies and more. “She ran well. Johnny liked her quite a bit afterwards. I didn’t have any other options so we’ll test the waters a little bit,” said David Donk, the trainer and part-owner of Lady Jasmine. “I thought she could be tactical and she was responsive when he asked. She’s breezed nice since.” Lady Jasmine will break from the rail Thursday. Seven of the first 15 runnings of the P.G. Johnson have been won by a maiden. Three of those have been sent out by Chad Brown, who on Thursday sends out Idea Generation. A daughter of Dubawi, Idea Generation finished second in a July 24 race that ultimately was declared a no contest because an outrider had alerted the jockeys down the backstretch to pull their horses up because there was a delay in removing the starting gate from the course. Some of the riders did not pull up, including Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard Idea Generation, who finished a nose behind Towhead. Six horses have come out of that no-contest race to run back, with Born Dapper winning a maiden race at Monmouth Park on Aug. 13. Brown said Idea Generation ran well enough to try this spot. “She ran a very good race. We’re trying to treat it like a win,” Brown said. With Ortiz serving a three-day suspension starting Wednesday, Flavien Prat has picked up the mount on Idea Generation. Recognize went 0 for 2 sprinting on dirt before trainer Bill Mott stretched her out to 1 1/16 miles on turf where she defeated New York-breds by 5 1/4 lengths on Aug. 18. “She loved the distance and liked the grass,” Mott said. “Now this is open company and she’s coming back on short rest so it’s a different story.” Junior Alvarado rides from post 8. Whichwaze, Indian Spideroo, and Damaso won maiden races on synthetic surfaces. Pachuca, a daughter of Ghostzapper, was a debut winner on dirt at Gulfstream Park, then finished second in the Ellis Park Debutante, also on dirt. The P.G. Johnson, named in memory of the late Hall of Fame trainer, goes as race 10 on an 11-race card that also includes the rescheduled $75,000 Michael G. Walsh Steeplechase Stakes, postponed from last Wednesday.
