One of the many changes to this year’s Saratoga summer is the addition of the Grade 3, $100,000 Peter Pan to the stakes schedule. Nine 3-year-olds were entered Saturday for the Peter Pan, which will offer 85 qualifying points to the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby to its top four finishers. The Peter Pan, run at 1 1/8 miles, shares billing with the Grade 3, $100,000 Schuylerville Stakes - a traditional Saratoga race - on Thursday’s 10-race opening-day card. :: Click to learn about our DRF's Free Past Performance program. Peter Pan entrant Candy Tycoon finished a distant second behind Ete Indien in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream. After Candy Tycoon’s sixth-place finish behind Tiz the Law in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 28, trainer Todd Pletcher gave him some class relief in an allowance at Oaklawn Park, where he finished second behind Rushie, who ran third in Saturday’s Grade 2 Blue Grass at Keeneland. Following that May 2 allowance, Candy Tycoon was given a little break before returning to the work tab on June 3. “I think the freshening has done him well,” Pletcher said. “He’s gained some weight, been training with purpose. I feel like he’s coming up to it in good order.” John Velazquez will ride Candy Tycoon from post 5. Modernist, winner of a division of the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds, will try to rebound from a seventh-place finish in the Belmont Stakes when he runs in the Peter Pan. He will break from post 3 under Junior Alvarado. Others entered in the Peter Pan are Celtic Striker, who beat Sonneman by 19 3/4 lengths in the two-horse Easy Goer Stakes on June 25, Mo Hawk, Country Grammer, Caracaro, Chestertown, and Katzarelli. Beautiful Memories, a 10-length debut winner at Churchill Downs on May 28, heads a field of eight maiden winners entered Saturday for Thursday’s Grade 3, $100,000 Schuylerville Stakes at six furlongs. :: To stay up to date, follow us on: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter Beautiful Memories, a daughter of Hard Spun, has followed that sharp debut win with a series of strong workouts for Mark Casse, who trains Beautiful Memories for John Oxley.
