Pennsylvania Stallions: Peace and Justice continues ascent

Peace and Justice was an immediate draw in Pennsylvania as the only son of prominent sire War Front in the state. He lived up to his early billing as the state’s standout freshman sire of 2020, and has since continued to make an impact in the Keystone State’s general sire ranks.

Peace and Justice was Pennsylania’s leading second-crop sire and leading sire of 2-year-old winners in 2021. Off those results, he was fourth among living Pennsylvania sires with state-sired progeny who were also returning to the state for the following season. In the 2022 season, Peace and Justice climbed up another rung, finishing third among living Pennsylvania sires with state-sired progeny who will continue to stand there in 2023.

Peace and Justice won three of eight career starts while racing on the turf at Belmont Park and Santa Anita. He also earned three Beyer Speed Figures of 95 or higher.

Peace and Justice initially entered stud at Pennsylvania’s Diamond B Farm in Mohrsville, then stood at Northview Pennsylvania in Peach Bottom. When Northview consolidated its operations to Maryland, he relocated to Blackstone Farm in Pine Grove, where he will stand for $5,000 in 2023.

Peace and Justice’s top runners include Like a Saltshaker, a stakes winner in Pennsylvania who is also stakes-placed against open company in New York, and stakes-placed winners Cuneo and Ice.

Sire list in flux

Weigelia, one of Pennsylania’s stalwarts, was the earnings leader among living and active sires with state-sired progeny of racing age on a general sires list that is in flux.

Overall earnings leader Wicked Strong moved to the state from Kentucky for the 2021 breeding season and, thus, will not have state-sired progeny on the track until 2024. His hefty bankroll is due to Kentucky-sired crops. Perennial Pennsylvania leader Jump Start, next on the earnings list regardless of sire status or progeny conception area, died in 2019.

Weigelia, who stands at WynOaks Farm in Delta, checks in next on that earnings list. The 22-year-old Safely’s Mark horse sired four stakes winners in 2022.

Brody’s Cause moves to Pennsylvania from Kentucky for the 2023 season, and his earnings immediately place him fourth on the general sire list. Rounding out the top five is Flashback, a stallion whose time in the state was short-lived. The former Kentucky stallion stood in Pennsylvania in 2019 and 2020, but was sold to stand in Korea starting with the 2021 season.
