Penn stakes winners try to double up

John McDulin|Jun 16, 2008

Pennsylvania-breds take center stage this week at Presque Isle Downs, beginning Wednesday with the Cozy Lace and the Lil E. Tee Handicap, both for 3-year-olds, followed by the Malvern Rose and Presidential Affair for older sprinters Thursday night, and wrapping up with the Willy Wank, for older horses going 1 1/8 miles, on Friday night.

Reata's Quik Punch looks to be the speed of the speed against five other 3-year-old fillies in the second running of the $75,000 Cozy Lace (race 6). Trained by Joe Orseno, Reata's Quik Punch has won both of her starts this year.

In her first out, on April 18 at Gulfstream Park, Reata's Quik Punch beat older horses in an optional claiming race by a neck.

She came back May 8 against Pa.-breds, winning the $75,000 Wonders Delight by 4 1/2 lengths at Penn National. Joe Bravo, the jockey for all three of Reata's Quik Punch wins, retains the mount.

Extra Sexy Psychic, the leading money earner in the field for trainer Mike Trombetta, chased Reata's Quick Punch in the Wonders Delight and will try to turn the tables in the Cozy Lace. Extra Sexy Psychic has yet to miss the board in her six lifetime starts, sporting a 3-2-1 record. Extra Sexy Psychic won a 6 1/2-furlong optional claiming race at Philadelphia Park on June 2 by 6 1/2 lengths.

Glitzen Glory, Quaint Lass, Coastal Solace, and Precious Rock complete the field.

Balian bested four of his six opponents in the $75,000 Lil E. Tee in his last out, the $75,000 Danzig at Penn National on May 8.

Trained by Steve Klesaris, Balian won the six-furlong Danzig by 1 1/2 lengths in front-running fashion. In his previous start, Balian won an open allowance race at Philadelphia Park on March 30 going a mile and 70 yards. Balian will be ridden by Luis Garcia for the first time in the six-furlong Lil E. Tee (race 7).

Double Down Vinman, sent off as the 3-5 favorite in the Danzig, will try to return to the form that saw him finish third in the $64,000 Spicy Award at Aqueduct on March 13 against open company. After overcoming a bumping incident at the start, Double Down Vinman led to late stretch before settling for third, beaten only a half- length.

Notgivinmyloveaway, Terriffico, Pensylvaniaexpress, Van Leroy, and Allotrope complete the field.
