Penn National: Trainer Pappada collects 1,000th career victory

When the 3-year-old gelding Bairds held on by a nose as the even-money favorite in Friday night’s seventh race at Penn National, it was a bittersweet moment for trainer Michael Pappada.

Bairds provided Pappada with the 1,000^th win of his career, exactly three weeks after delivering victory number 999. But after the race, Bairds changed hands, thanks to a $10,000 claim placed by trainer John Locke.

Pappada registered his first win at Aqueduct on Feb. 20, 1976.
