Penn: Mixed Up rallies

Joe DeVivo|Aug 21, 2004

Mixed Up ($4.80) foiled 13-year-old Sir Echo's bid to become the oldest stakes winner ever at Penn National Race Course when he overtook the pacesetter in the final 70 yards of Friday night's $40,900 Capital City Handicap.

Sir Echo attempted to wire the field in the 1 1/16-mile turf race and opened a two-length lead on the final turn. Mixed Up, ridden by apprentice Chip Van Hassel for trainer Jonathan Sheppard, was guided from the rail to the middle of the course and drew off by 1 3/4 lengths. The winning time over firm turf was 1:42.49.

The final three races of the program were canceled because of lightning.
