Peggy O targets Jammed Lovely
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Peggy O has quickly blown through her Ontario-sired conditions in four starts this year and will step up to stakes company for the first time in the $150,000 Jammed Lovely Stakes on Nov. 7 at Woodbine, trainer Catherine Day Phillips said. The seven-furlong sprint on Polytrack is for Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies.
“That’s a logical spot for her,” she said. “She had two races quite close together, so this gives her a little more time to get organized for the Jammed Lovely.”
After debuting with a three-length victory July 1, Peggy O has won her last two starts by a combined 8 3/4 lengths, including her most recent start in gate-to-wire fashion against first-level allowance opposition Oct. 7.
“Peggy O has really taken to racing quite nicely,” Day Phillips said. “She’s running like a house on fire.”
Peggy O’s lone blemish came in her second start Aug. 30, when she was pulled up in the stretch by jockey David Moran. Day Phillips said gate issues before the race and a scope after the race gave Peggy O a couple of excuses for that start.
“I think she just wasn’t focused on racing,” she said. “David said she wasn’t breathing well, and he didn’t feel like she was comfortable, so he pulled her up. When we got her back to the barn and scoped her, her lungs were all full of Polytrack, so she was a real mess. We gave her a break and regrouped and reorganized.”
Since that start, Peggy O has emerged as a nice prospect for Day Phillips, who has had a strong meet, with 11 wins from 39 starts.
