HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The first set of invitations were released on Sunday for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup here on Jan. 29, and it would have certainly been a treat for racing fans worldwide if the top three names on that list – defending champion and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Knicks Go, Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Life Is Good, and the sensational Flightline – were destined to meet. Unfortunately, that dream matchup, is not in the cards. While Knicks Go and Life Is Good are expected to do battle in the Pegasus World Cup, trainer John Sadler confirmed Monday what was pretty much expected all along: Flightline would not be coming east for the big event. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports “It’s not really in the plan,” Sadler said. “He’s going to start back breezing this week, but we’re looking for something more like March for his next start, one race before the Met Mile,” Sadler said. “It’s not that we’re scared of any of the horses, we’re just concerned about the spacing of the race. It comes up a bit too soon.” Even without Flightline in the gate, the Pegasus promises to be a sensational event bringing together arguably the two most impressive winners on the 2021 Breeders’ Cup program. The nominations list also includes Dr Post, Eight Rings, Express Train, Ginobili, Happy Saver, Mandaloun, Midnight Bourbon, Sir Winston, and Super Stock. The also-eligibles are Chess Chief, Concert Tour, Endorsed, Fearless, Officiating, Stilleto Boy, and Title Ready. The invitation list will be revised each of the next two Sundays. The Pegasus World Cup card features seven graded stakes worth a total of $5.2 million and also includes the $1 million Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational. Knicks Go, a 2 3/4-length winner of the Pegasus World Cup a year ago, has been training at his winter home at the Fair Grounds, where he last breezed six furlongs in 1:14 on Sunday. Life Is Good continues to work in sensational fashion for the Pegasus, with his latest effort five furlongs in 1:00.40 punctuated by another outstanding gallop-out last Saturday at Palm Beach Downs. Two horses on the also-eligible list worked Monday at Gulfstream Park. Officiating went an easy-half-mile in 48.35, out five furlongs in 1:01.40. Endorsed worked five-eighths in an eye-catching 58.84, up six furlongs in 1:12.75 for trainer Mike Maker about 45 minutes later. Officiating and Endorsed finished first and second, less than a length apart, going seven furlongs in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector here on Dec. 11. Although Officiating is nominated for Saturday’s $75,000 Sunshine Classic, his trainer, Saffie Joseph Jr., said the next stop for him will likely be the Grade 3 Fred Hooper going a mile here on Jan. 29 where he could be joined by stablemate Ny Traffic, who worked five furlongs in 59.09 on Monday. “I was disappointed with his work last week, but today was a big improvement and I think he’s trending back in the right direction now,” Joseph said of the stakes-winning New York-bred Ny Traffic. Joseph was also extremely excited about the manner in which his 3-year-old prospect A. P.’s Secret captured Sunday’s main event going a mile for his second win in three career starts. “We added blinkers for the race and they kept him much more focused,” he said. “It’s more like what we’ve been seeing from him in the mornings. The blinkers definitely helped him stay in the bridle easier. “He wants to go two turns all day, so that’s where he’ll head next time. The Holy Bull comes back too soon, but everything else comes into play including the Fountain of Youth and all the races in both the Tampa and Fair Grounds 3-year-old series.” Joseph’s leading 3-year-old prospect is White Abarrio, who is being pointed for the Grade 3 Holy Bull on Feb. 5. He breezed five furlongs here on Monday in 1:01.02, with his final quarter in 22.58, while getting the better of older handicap winner Girolamo’s Attack.
