Peck: How I'll play Monmouth for Sunday, July 31
Sunday’s Haskell card at Monmouth Park is solid, and the pick four leading to the marquee race of the meet looks very playable:
Race 9: New York shipper 5-BLACKTYPE is the sole "A" in this race for me, as he has the best figures in the race and in fact comes off a career-best Beyer. But for the purposes of this ticket I'll include 3-ALMASTY, who may be the best of the speeds, and 1-CAPTAIN DIXIE who is capable of his best.
A's: 5
B's: 1, 3
RACE 10: 1-ESKENFORMONEY was behind Genre when they met in the Lady's Secret last time but Genre held the advantage in terms of race flow, while Eskenformoney ran a deceptively good race for third. 6-BIRDATTHEWIRE disappointed in the Princess Rooney last time but she has license to move way up with that race under her belt and with this stretch out to two turns.
A's: 1, 6
RACE 11: 7-CALI THIRTY SEVEN is a live longshot with a legit threat to win the Matchmaker, especially if she is on top of a controlled pace. 5-TAMMY THE TORPEDO has the speed to stay close, an edge if the tempo is indeed mild. 8-INVADING HUMOR prompted Isabella Sings early in the Eatontown and held well late. 1-NAKUTI moves inside after a wide trip in her latest. 3-PINK POPPY has to be respected off that last figure, and her early speed helps her cause. 10-ITSONLYACTINGDAD posted a Beyer last time that could be good enough to win this.
A's: 1,3,5,7,8,10
RACE 12: 1-NYQUIST looms the controlling speed from the rail in the Haskell, and that is no small advantage. His lone loss came in the Preakness, when he endured as tough a trip as a speed horse could in terms of pace dynamics, and he still held well. If he does face pressure and get tired late 4-GUN RUNNER should be ideally spotted to benefit, as he has the tactical speed to get position just in behind the speeds.
A's: 1, 4
