Peck: Gulfstream pick five for Saturday, Jan. 28

Saturday's late pick five at Gulfstream ends with the $12 million Pegasus, a race where one would presumably have to take a stand among the two favorites, with prior legs tough to decipher. Here's one way to play it:

RACE 8: FLYING TO HONOR seems to have the best work tab of the firsters and therefore merits inclusion. But BORSA VENTO sports a couple of nice works of his own, and an unfavorable race flow provides an excuse for the dull effort when last seen. That said, the horse to beat is clearly LOOKIN FOR EIGHT, who has to be included on all tickets off that debut sprint, where he earned an 81 Beyer Speed Figure.

A's: 1, 8, 10
B's: NONE
C's: NONE

RACE 9: A typically wide-open turf sprint that likely will come down to race flow and trips. The latter is almost impossible to predict, and the former is tricky in this particular race, so I'll use them all and hope for something wild (12).

B's: 1, 2, 3, 8, 12
C's: 4, 5, 6, 7

RACE 10: WAPI was likely prepping in that Tampa run and should benefit from that race as well as today's extra distance, which seems to be what she wants. SUFFUSED makes her first start since October, but she runs well fresh, and her Beyers fit very well here (2).

C's: NONE

RACE 11: DIAMOND BACHELOR is the one to catch here, and in a race lacking an obvious pace scenario, that's an edge. TWILIGHT ECLIPSE makes his first start since the Breeders' Cup and will be very tough if he's able to run back to his best figures. CHARMING KITTEN has some tactical speed and a good late kick when right; the son of Kitten's Joy owns four wins over this course (3).

RACE 12: ARROGATE could not have been more impressive in his Breeders' Cup Classic score over California Chrome, running down a sensational horse who had a tactical advantage. Today's rematch figures to come down to these two, but ARROGATE has the edge based on the Classic score and the post-position draw, where California Chrome took the worst of it (1).
