Peck: Golden Gate Fields pick four for Saturday, April 30
Saturday's all-grass pick four at Golden Gate Fields includes the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile, where the two morning-line favorites, Bal a Bali and Gabriel Charles, seem to have the edge. Here's one way to play it.
RACE 7: Using them all in this statebred maiden special weight turf event, which by definition is a wide-open race. Likely favorites DORIS JOHNSON and STIPEND can certainly win this, but one could make a case for just about every runner in the field, including those at the longest prices.
A's: 3, 4, 7
B's: 2, 5
C's: 1, 6, 8
RACE 8: BAL A BALI comes out of some strong races, and he ran quite well in them. He adds blinkers for this, and his tactical speed should help him overcome the wide post. GABRIEL CHARLES is even wider, and he's been away since last summer, but he has to be respected based on his best figures.
A's: 12, 13
B's: NONE
C's: NONE
RACE 9: Standing alone with COUNTRY ROAD, who will likely win this if he runs to his most recent race. He was aided by a favorable trip there, but given the presence of several possible speeds in this field, he may find himself in a similar situation.
A's: 8
B's: NONE
C's: NONE
RACE 10: ACE DUECE is one I'd use defensively given the overall record but one I'd use in this type of "caveman" ticket regardless. TROYES tries grass for the first time but has the right running style as a closer, and the drop in class should help the cause. WINNING CAUSEWAY is the one to beat and a possible single if one were to choose a deeper spread in race 9. PRINCE OF PRAGUE merits respect based on the Beyer Speed Figure he posted in his turf debut.
A's: 2, 6, 9
B's: 1
C's: NONE
