Mrs. Astor, the five-time stakes winner, is nearing retirement in peak form. Mrs. Astor won the Grade 3 Red Carpet Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 3/8 miles on turf at Del Mar on Saturday for the second consecutive year, the first time the race had a repeat winner since it was launched in 2014. Trainer Jonathan Thomas said on Wednesday that Mrs. Astor will race again in coming months, perhaps twice, before she is sent to Kentucky to be bred. Owned and bred by George Strawbridge Jr., Mrs. Astor has won 7 of 21 starts and earned $567,235. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! She displayed a remarkable rush to catch stretch leader Public Assembly. Mrs. Astor will not race again until the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting, and has two potential opportunities against fillies and mares on turf in the early weeks of that meeting – the Grade 3 Robert Frankel Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on Dec. 28, and the $100,000 Astra Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on Jan. 19. The Astra Stakes was not run earlier this year, and was reinstated to the 2025-2026 stakes schedule. “With any luck, we can get two more runs,” Thomas said. “With the Astra back on the docket, it may make the most sense to point for that.” Thomas said Mrs. Astor is scheduled to be sent to Kentucky in February. Aside from the two wins in the Red Carpet, Mrs. Astor’s victories include the Frankel Stakes last December, and two marathon turf stakes at Santa Anita earlier this year – the Santa Barbara and Possibly Perfect stakes. “She’s a pleasure to train,” Thomas said. “Some horses, you appreciate them, but they don’t make life easy. This filly has been easy to train. She’s one of the most accommodating horses I’ve been around. It’s literally everything about her.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
