HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Jerry Caroom and Harry Rosenblum are Arkansas residents highly invested in the state’s breeding program and on Friday they have homebreds who will meet in the eighth race at Oaklawn Park. The entry-level allowance is for fillies and mares bred in Arkansas. It will be run over six furlongs. The purse is $103,000. Rosenblum will be represented by Pattern Bet from post 7, and Caroom has Mozingo from post 10. Pattern Bet is a 4-year-old by Gentlemen’s Bet – a multiple stakes winner for Rosenblum who ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in 2013. Rosenblum stands the stallion at McDowell Farm in Sparkman, Ark. “Pattern Bet is from his first crop,” Rosenblum said. “He’s getting about 60 percent winners from starters. She is his first stakes-placed” runner. Pattern Bet, who is trained by Ron Moquett, is coming off a fourth-place finish in a first-level allowance for Arkansas-breds on Feb. 20 at Oaklawn. “She was in terrible trouble the other day,” Rosenblum said. “She would have won.” :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Caroom bought Fast Find and brought her into the Arkansas-bred program after she had a significant impact in Texas. Fast Find produced Direct Dial, a Texas-bred horse of the year who won nine stakes races for earnings of $546,931, as well as the Texas-bred stakes winners Scooter’s Choice and Shaded. Mozingo, who is a full sister to all three of those horses, is the first foal Fact Find produced for Caroom. Fact Find, who recently died, also foaled a colt for Caroom. He has high hopes for the Arkansas-bred yearling by Grade 1 winner Higher Power. Mozingo, who is trained by Tom Amoss, was fourth at this level in her most recent start Feb. 18 at Oaklawn. “She ran a pretty good race last time,” Caroom said. “We’ll see what happens. “I want that pedigree to kick in.” Caroom has raced a pair of recent Arkansas-bred horses of the year in Tempt Fate (2021), who he said is now retired, and Hoonani Road (2019). Caroom, who has five mares, has yearlings coming up by Echo Town, Gift Box, and Gormley, as well as 2-year-olds by Twirling Candy and Mastery. Rosenblum also has much to look forward to with the offspring of Gentlemen’s Bet. “There aren’t a lot of mares Arkansas,” he said. “We feel like we’ve been getting our fair share. But every year becomes more competitive. The horse is putting out a good product. The people who own the horses like them. We like what he’s done thus far with a limited number of mares.” Pattern Bet will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano, while Cristian Torres has the mount on Mozingo. The field of 11 on Friday also includes One Way Or Another, the probable favorite after running second by a head in a first-level allowance for Arkansas-breds on Feb. 20 at Oaklawn. Martin Garcia has the mount from post 6 for trainer Randy Morse. ◗ Ipsum Gratus, who runs in the second race Friday at Oaklawn, is co-owned by Tony Froning, who is competing in the National Horseplayers Championship tournament in Las Vegas. She will start as a top contender in the $12,500 starter allowance for fillies and mares over 1 1/16 miles. Gabe Saez has the mount for trainer Norm McKnight. – additional reporting by Steve Andersen :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
