Aussie Girl can be a dangerous mare in Saturday’s $150,000 Suwannee River Stakes at Gulfstream Park, provided she maintains a patient style in the first half of the one-mile turf race for fillies and mares. That is trainer William Walden’s perspective on Aussie Girl’s chances after reflecting on her win in the Noble Damsel Stakes at a mile on turf at Aqueduct on Oct. 19. Aussie Girl, who was ridden by Dylan Davis, won with a stalking trip even though she was eager at times. “That last race she ran was good,” Walden said on Thursday. “I thought she was pretty aggressive. She kind of towed Dylan around the first turn and down the backside. That’s not an idealistic way to travel in turf races. I would love if we can get some cover.” Aussie Girl, owned by Woodford Thoroughbreds, may get that sort of trip in the Suwannee River, which drew a field of 11. Do Gooder, who drew the inside post, and Leo Toro, unbeaten in three starts this year, are expected to race near the front. :: Play Gulfstream Park with confidence! DRF Past Performances, Picks, and Clocker Reports are available now.  The Suwannee River Stakes is an important start for Aussie Girl and could lead to an appearance in the Grade 2 Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf Invitational, a $500,000 race at 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 24. Tyler Gaffalione rides Aussie Girl for the first time. “I think she’s sitting on a good race,” Walden said. In the Noble Damsel, Aussie Girl won by a neck over odds-on favorite Tax Implications, who finished three-quarters of a length in front of Feather Boa, a 9-1 outsider. Feather Boa, trained by Todd Pletcher, had her first start in nearly 13 months in the Noble Damsel, which was her second start in the United States. A 6-year-old South African-bred mare, Feather Boa starts in the Suwannee River and will race as a closer. Feather Boa was a Group 2 stakes winner at 7 1/4 furlongs in South Africa in 2023. The Suwannee River is the ninth race on an 11-race program that includes four other stakes. Earlier, there are two $125,000 sprints – the Sugar Swirl Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs and the Janus Stakes at five furlongs on turf. Sugar Swirl Mystic Lake and Nic’s Style should dominate the betting in the Sugar Swirl, which drew a field of seven. Mystic Lake, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., has won her last four starts since late May, all in sprint stakes on dirt at four different venues. A winner of 11 of 20 starts, Mystic Lake won the 2024 Sugar Swirl from the front and will be prominent on Saturday along with Ms. Bucchero, a two-time winner in sprint stakes at Laurel Park. Nic’s Style has won 7 of 9 starts but was beaten in her last race, a fourth-place finish in the Pumpkin Pie Stakes at seven furlongs at Aqueduct on Nov. 8. The race was won by Weigh the Risks, who prevailed in the Go for Wand Stakes at Aqueduct on Dec. 13. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. Available every race day.  Nic’s Style, trained by Bill Mott, has won four stakes, including the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs at Gulfstream in March. She stalked the pace before rallying to win by a neck that day, and could get a similar trip in the Sugar Swirl. Janus Stakes The Janus is a rematch of the 2024 running, in which Coppola and Reef Runner were first and third. Coppola, who often sets the pace, has since won two sprint stakes for trainer Dale Romans, including the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint in January. The Janus is Coppola’s first start since a second-place finish by a neck in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Sprint at Ellis Park on Aug. 3. Coppola was listed as a vet scratch from the Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 30. Reef Runner, third in the Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint, runs from off the pace. Since being gelded in July, the 4-year-old has finished first in three of four starts, though he was disqualified from first to second in the Green Flash Handicap. Reef Runner later won the Grade 2 Eddie D Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 27. On Nov. 1 at Del Mar, Reef Runner closed from ninth in a field of 12 to finish fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Both Coppola and Reef Runner adore Gulfstream’s turf course. Coppola has won 4 of 7 starts on the surface. Reef Runner has won 3 of 10 starts and has never finished worse than third. They must hold off a late threat from Litigation, who makes his stakes debut on Saturday after winning three of his last four starts in turf sprints in Kentucky. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
