Path of David switching to main track for Robert B. Lewis Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Path of David, who won Thursday’s $79,250 Eddie Logan Stakes on turf at Santa Anita, is being pointed for the $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes on the main track here Feb. 6, trainer Kristin Mulhall said. The 1 1/16-mile Lewis for 3-year-olds is a prep race for the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 9.
“We wanted to see how he came out of it, and so far, he looks good,” Mulhall said.
Path of David is unbeaten in two starts since being gelded. Path of David won a maiden race on turf in November and was the even-money favorite in the Logan Stakes, for 2-year-olds at a mile on turf. Ridden by Joe Talamo, Path of David closed from eighth in a field of 10 to win by a length over 6-1 Imperious One. Path of David was timed in 1:36.07.
“At the three-eighths pole, I had so much horse,” Talamo said.
Path of David was winless in four starts for Midwest-based trainer Michael Stidham before being sent to Mulhall in the fall. By Istan, Path of David races for Ike and Dawn Thrash and Sam and Janet Alley.
“When he came to me, he’d just been gelded,” Mulhall said. “He’s filled out. He’s trained so much better than before his maiden win.”
Path of David has won 2 of 6 starts and earned $90,555.
The unlucky runner in the Eddie Logan field was third-place finisher Arabian Leopard. Trained by Bob Baffert, Arabian Leopard broke slowly and trailed to the final quarter-mile before unleashing an eye-catching rally. He was beaten 1 1/2 lengths.
