Parx Racing: Lisa Stannard returns from seven-month layoff Tuesday
A pair of consistent mares who had a taste of success racing in restricted stakes will look to clear their second allowance condition against open company in Tuesday’s $46,000 feature at Parx Racing.
Lisa Stannard, the winner of the Silver Train for Pennsylvania-breds last June at Penn National, will return from a seven-month layoff in the six-furlong seventh race, a second-level optional $25,000 claimer for fillies and mares. Her six opponents include the New York-bred Here’s Zealicious, third in the Broadway at Aqueduct in 2013 and a winner in her last visit to Parx two months ago.
Lisa Stannard comes into her 5-year-old campaign after going 3 for 9 in each of her first two seasons of racing. In addition to her win in the six-furlong Silver Train, she was second in the seven-furlong Foxy J G at Parx and third as the 3-5 favorite at the same level as Tuesday’s race.
Trainer Mike Pino is 3 for 15 (20 percent) with horses like Lisa Stannard making their first start in more than 180 days in a dirt sprint.
Here’s Zealicious owns a 5-for-13 career record, including two wins in three starts locally. She defeated 10 opponents when she romped by 4 1/2 lengths in a first-level allowance Feb. 1 but faded badly when shipped to New York for last month’s Broadway over a sloppy track.
Notably, the 6-year-old Here’s Zealicious will be making the second start of her current form cycle. Each of the last two times she has run in that situation, she won, contributing to owner-trainer Peter Kazamias’s 4-for-12 record in that category over the past two years.
The 7-year-old Tanivan has collected 11 of her 14 lifetime wins at Parx. But she prefers distances longer than six furlongs. In fact, the last time she raced six furlongs was January 2010 at Laurel Park. Tanivan was up close at the stretch call of a seven-furlong race March 30 before backing up in the final furlong to finish fifth as the 2-1 favorite.
Joya Real and Two Hearts in One both take the next logical step up the class ladder after winning first-level allowances last time out. Joya Real hasn’t run since scoring a 16-1 upset Jan. 20. Two Hearts in One returns to Parx, where she is 3 for 6 lifetime, after winning a slowly run sprint as the 9-5 favorite at Penn National on March 20.
