Parx finale declared no-contest after spill
The 10th race at Parx was declared a no-contest on Monday after seven-pound apprentice rider Kevin Carmona took a hard fall nearing the first turn and outriders signaled the other seven riders in the race to pull up their mounts in the stretch as Carmona remained down on the track.
Carmona was aboard De Punta a Punta in the 1 1/16-mile race for $10,000 maiden claimers. He was racing between and just behind Ravage and King Victoria when De Punta a Punta appeared to clip heels and fell, throwing Carmona forward in a somersault.
Carmona was quickly loaded in the ambulance and taken to Arria-Torresdale Hospital in Philadelphia. He is conscious and talking but has a cut on his forehead and some neck pain, according to his agent, Anibal Prado.
De Punta a Punta, a 6-year-old gelding trained by James Nicholson, got to his feet after the accident, chased after the field, and reportedly was walked off the track.
Carmona, 20, is a native of Puerto Rico. He began riding in the United States at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 27, 2018. When the Gulfstream Park West meet ended in late November, he shifted his tack to Parx, where he has won 18 races from 133 mounts. He is 34 for 349 in his career.
The stewards lit the inquiry sign after the field was pulled up and declared the race a no-contest. The 10th race was the final race of the day at Parx. All single-race wagers were refunded and consolation daily doubles and pick threes were paid to all runners in the 10th.
The $2 daily double of Isabella Smile (3) and all of the runners in race 10 paid $13.80. The $1 pick three of I'm Not Joking (3) - Isabella Smile and all runners in race 10 returned $28.10.
