Parx cancels Saturday card due to frigid forecast
Parx Racing has canceled its Saturday card due to frigid conditions that are expected to follow the Thursday blizzard in the Northeast.
Saturday temperatures in Bensalem, Pa. are expected to stay in the teens. Winds of 16 miles per hour, gusting to 28 mph are forecast.
Last Tuesday's card at Parx was canceled after a horse broke down in the first race and was euthanized. Temperatures on Tuesday were in the lower 20's with wind speed in the teens.
Parx also canceled its Sunday and Monday races due to cold temperatures and wind chills, just as Aqueduct and Laurel Park did.
On Tuesday, Lust for Money, a 12-1 shot in the conditioned $5,000 claiming race, stumbled at the start and then "went wrong and fell" approaching the quarter pole, according to the Equibase chart. Jockey Lery Pinero was not injured in the spill, according to his agent, Miguel Esplindola.
A consolation daily double and pick three were paid using the winner of the first race, Two Step Temper ($28.20). The second and third races were treated as "all winners."
Racing is scheduled to resume at Parx on Monday.
