DEL MAR, Calif. – Fighting off challenges from two rivals through the final five furlongs, Parenting remained unbeaten after three starts with a neck win in a one-mile allowance race at Del Mar on Sunday. The win was Parenting’s first start since an easy win by 7 1/2 lengths in the Affirmed Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on June 9. Owned by Wathnan Racing, Parenting was considered for the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 20, but was not shipped to the New Jersey track. On Sunday, Parenting ($2.80) disputed the pace throughout, repelling a threat from Arrowthegreat on the backstretch and from eventual runner-up Hero Status in the stretch. Parenting was timed in 1:36.43 and earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 100. Sunday’s win may lead to a major stakes appearance in August, although trainer Bob Baffert did not disclose any plans on Sunday. “I don’t have anything penciled in,” Baffert said. “He’s still learning. He had every reason to get beat.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
