Paramount Prince takes early lead all the way in Seagram Cup

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Mark Casse-trained 2023 King’s Plate victor Paramount Prince won a thrilling renewal of Saturday’s Grade 3 Seagram Cup at Woodbine over the favored Runaway Again.
Paramount Prince ($9.50) went straight to the lead in the 1 1/16-mile event and set honest fractions under Fraser Aebly. Twin City took up the chase in second while Runaway Again raced two-wide in fourth on the backstretch.
After getting squeezed back to trail early, last year’s Plate winner Mansetti mounted a four-wide rally on the far turn to take dead aim at Paramount Prince, with Runaway Again to his inside. Runaway Again went on with his bid, but came up a head short of Paramount Prince, who covered the distance in 1:43.24.
Sedbury’s Ghost finished another 5 1/2 lengths back while edging out Rapid Test for third. War Court, Mansetti, Twin City, and Lucky Guest completed the order of finish.
Paramount Prince, who also won the 2024 Seagram Cup, was coming off a narrow loss to Runaway Again in the Grade 3 Dominion Day.
“Paramount Prince is just a really nice horse with a high cruising speed,” Aebly said. “He finds his stride and he’s a hard horse to beat that way. At the head of the lane, I could see Mansetti start to come around on the outside. Paramount Prince got into another gear for me and I was thinking in my head where’s (Runaway Again)? He showed his face at the eighth pole, but we got the bob today.”
Paramount Prince earned $126,000 of the $209,300 purse for owners Gary Barber and Michael Langlois. The gelded son of Society’s Chairman was bred in Ontario by Ericka Rusnak.
