Panici rides both winners of off-the-turf stakes

Lauren King/Coglianese Photos Luca Panici completes a stakes double in a pair of off-the-turf stakes aboard 14-1 shot Can't Explain in the Wasted Tears.

Jockey Luca Panici celebrated a stakes double at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, when Johnny Handsome forged along the inside to win the $75,000 The Vid and Can’t Explain accounted for the $75,000 Wasted Tears.

Both races were originally scheduled for turf, but were move to a sloppy main track.

Johnny Handsome ($5.40) trailed in the early stages of The Vid, as Rizwan set the pace in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds and up. Johnny Handsome rallied up the rail late to cover the distance in 1:47.50.

Leo Gabriel Jr. trains Johnny Handsome for Diamond Racing, Inc., and Jay and Joan Janssen.

Can’t Explain ($31) was always prominent in the Wasted Tears for a 1 1/2-length win over Latique. She covered 1 1/16 miles for fillies and mares in 1:45.

Ralph Nicks trains Can’t Explain for Whisper Hill Farm.
