Paluxy ($51.40) catches Warrant at wire in Governor's Cup
Paluxy put in a determined bid through the stretch to catch odds-on favorite Warrant on the wire and win the $100,000 Governor’s Cup on Friday night at Remington Park.
The 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds and up was the opening-night feature at the Oklahoma City track.
Paluxy ($51.40) trailed early as Holden the Lute set fractions of 24.98 seconds for the opening quarter, 50.01 for the half-mile and 1:14.45 for six furlongs. Warrant engaged afterward, as Paluxy advanced three wide on the final turn, came into the stretch four wide and rolled home, covering the distance on a fast track in 1:52.77.
Floyd Wethey Jr. was aboard Paluxy for trainer Scott Young.
“Scott and I talked about it before," Wethey said in a post-race interview with Remington. "Take back, save as much ground as you can and stay out of his way from the three-eighths pole home - and try not to use his kick too early. It all worked out great.”
Holden the Lute finished third, three lengths behind Warrant.
Paluxy is a son of Brody’s Cause who races for Blue and Gold Racing.
Young told Remington officials Paluxy would be considered for the Claiming Crown, which will be held later this year at Fair Grounds.
Racing resumes Saturday night.
