Palomita tries to run Tapeta mark to 2 for 2 in allowance
Palomita will try to stay perfect on Tapeta when she runs in a second-level allowance race for fillies and mares at Gulfstream Park on Thursday. The five-furlong dash, which has a $62,500 claiming option and is open to horses who have not won a race since May 4, drew six horses and goes as race 4 on a nine-race program that begins at 12:50 p.m. Eastern.
Trained by David Fawkes, Palomita broke sharply from the inside post and was never threatened while easily beating Awsum Roar in a first-level allowance race at Gulfstream on Oct. 17 in her first try on Tapeta. She is moving up in class on Thursday, but Aswum Roar is an 11-time winner with $316,765 in earnings so the step up does not seem so steep. All of Aswum Roar’s wins did come on turf, but she was coming off a third-place finish in the $60,000 Miami Shores Handicap on Tapeta.
Palomita was winning for the first time since she took them all the way in a maiden special weight race at Keeneland on April 12, 2019. However, she is consistently in the mix, with 10 top three finishes from 12 starts.
The Kentucky-bred daughter of Into Mischief can pass horses, and could get a nice trip from the outside post, where she can track the other speed with Emisael Jaramilllo riding.
Odramark is the only horse entered for the $62,500 price, and she could be dangerous making her first start for trainer Kelly Breen, who the past five years has a 20-percent strike rate and $1.42 ROI first off the claim.
In the race Breen claimed Odramark, the 6-year-old daughter of Tapizar finished last in a $22,000 claimer that was washed off the turf and moved to the main track at Monmouth Park on Sept. 26.
Odramark is a four-time winner on turf, with her latest victory coming two starts back in a first-level allowance race with a $25,000 claiming option at Colonial on Aug. 23. Being the second foal out of a mare who finished third in a couple of races on Polytrack at Turfway Park, she might be okay running on a synthetic surface, and being a stalker she won’t mind the shape of the race.
She will break from post 2 with leading rider Edgard Zayas up.
All Quality is perfect in two starts on Tapeta. Considering she won her debut going seven furlongs in a maiden special weight race on the main track at Woodbine in 2019, it is a bit surprising she did not make her next start on a synthetic track until she won a first-level allowance with a $25,000 claiming option at Gulfstream on Oct. 3.
Trained by Mark Casse, All Quality forced the pace in the mile and 70-yard race and figures to come from a stalking position with the move back to a sprint.
Reinagol, fourth in the $60,000 Village of Biscayne Handicap in her last start on Aug. 28, could be dangerous if she can handle the transition from turf to Tapeta.
Reinagol has speed and can fire fresh. The only 3-year-old in the field, she could be the one they have to run down. She breaks from the inside post with Sami Camacho riding for trainer Victor Barboza Jr.
