Pair of shippers drops into DeBartolo contention
The 11 turf horses in the $75,000 Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Handicap at Remington Park on Saturday night win often. Gaelico is chasing his fifth straight score as one of four horses in the field coming off multiple wins. Overall, six starters have won at least their last race.
But the most dangerous horses might be a pair of shippers dropping in from the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes at Arlington Park. Dreams Cut Short was fifth in the 1 1/2-mile race for trainer Mike Maker, while Olympic Thunder ran sixth for trainer Ken McPeek. They are among the leading contenders in the 1 1/16-mile DeBartolo.
Dreams Cut Short was beaten just four lengths at 18-1 in the Stars and Stripes on July 12.
“He ran his race in Chicago,” said Maker, noting the quality of the competition in the Grade 3 contest.
The Pizza Man, who won the race, returned in his next start to capture the $400,000 American St. Leger at Arlington.
