A pair of boffo babies top card

Karen M. Johnson|Oct 23, 2001

ELMONT, N.Y. - A New Twist, an extremely impressive maiden winner in the summer, returns to the races on Thursday afternoon at Belmont Park. On the same card, On Parade, a 2-year-old filly bred to be a champion, makes her debut in a maiden race.

In the fifth, A New Twist, owned by Lucille Conover, meets four other 2-year-old fillies in a first-level allowance race at six furlongs.

A New Twist, trained by John Kimmel, will be a heavy favorite here after drawing off to a nine-length win in her debut at Belmont Park on July 7. A Storm Cat filly, she quickly shot to the lead soon after the start of the five-furlong race and widened her advantage with every stride, without urging from jockey Edgar Prado. A New Twist clicked off fractions of 22.28 seconds and 45.99 on her way to a final time of 57.72 seconds.

Since the win, Kimmel has been nursing his filly through tender shins. A New Twist has been working sharply at Belmont Park, including a bullet five furlongs in 1:00.02, handily, the fastest of 27 works at the distance on Oct. 11.

Prado has the return mount on A New Twist, who drew post 3 and will race with first-time Lasix.

Each of the fillies A New Twist will meet in this spot exit wins in maiden races, but none nearly as impressive or as fast as A New Twist's win.

In the following race, there's another 2-year-old Storm Cat filly, On Parade, who has the makings of a special horse.

On Parade, who is out Grade 1 winner My Flag, makes her debut against eight other fillies in the seven-furlong race, and likely will be the favorite.

On Parade is the first foal out of My Flag, who won the 1995 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Belmont Park.

My Flag, a daughter of champions Easy Goer and Personal Ensign, won more than $1.5 million for owner Ogden Phipps and trainer Shug McGaughey, the same connections behind On Parade.

Jerry Bailey has the mount on On Parade, who races with Lasix and has been working steady half-miles at Belmont.
