Horseshoe Indianapolis

Pair of 3-year-old restricted stakes top card

John McDulin|Aug 25, 2014

Indiana Grand Race Course once again breaks up the handicapping week with a pair of stakes for 3-year-old Indiana-bred progeny of donated stallions sold at the Indiana Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association live auction or were listed as reserve not attained for the Internet auction. There will be a race for 3-year old fillies and the Paul Tinkle for colts and geldings. Both have a $75,000 purse and will be run at a mile on the main track.

Key contenders

Race 7 ITOBA Stallion Seasons Fillies

Lena Love (Last 3 Beyers: 53-51-14)

• She has won her last two going a mile, both in claiming races at ThistleDown in open company.

• She is the only three-time winner in the race.

• The daughter of City Weekend is the only starter to have won at the one-mile distance.

Hope and Change (Last 3 Beyers: 60-58-38)

• She ran here last Wednesday but trainer Barbara McBride is 1 for 1 with horses running back sooner than a week.

• The jockey-trainer combo has won at a 22 percent clip this meet.

• She has the highest last-race Beyer Speed Figure.

Deliver (Last 3 Beyers: 32-68-44)

• She drew off to a nearly six-length win two starts ago at Mountaineer Park in a six-furlong entry level allowance race. She earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 68, the highest lifetime figure in the field. Trained by Tommy Short, she has the most starts in the field with 13.

• Aziperform (Last 3 Beyers: 57-26-32)

• She just missed in previous start for trainer Larry Holt, finishing second in a statebred claiming race. She has never been a mile but her Tomlinson of 324 at the distance suggests it should be no problem.

• Holt wins 23 percent with sprinters stretching out.

Race 9 ITOBA males

Diego (Last 3 Beyers: 61-59-50)

• He has a win at the distance – the only horse to do so – for trainer Gary Patrick. He won his maiden race May 23 locally going this same distance.

• Article of Faith gelding has a win and two seconds in three local dirt starts, including a second in the Sagamore Sire Stakes June 4.

Thurman (Last 3 Beyer: 57-61-26)

• He has run evenly in his last two going short, suggesting he may like going longer. His Tomlinson of 294 also suggests it won’t be a problem.

• Top jockey Fernando De La Cruz will ride him for the first time.

Downtown Kid (Last 3 Beyers: 63-38-30)

• He has the highest last race and highest lifetime Beyer of 63, earned in a romp last start.
