Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Breeders’ Futurity trials save the best for last
The sixth and final time trial at Los Alamitos on Sunday for the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Breeders’ Futurity on Oct. 3 is likely to have a significant influence on the list of finalists.
The last trial is the strongest, with Watch Out and Favorite Honey meeting for the first time since they were second and third in the Governor’s Cup Futurity on July 31.
Watch Out, trained by James Glenn Jr. for Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred, may not be favored. The 2-1 morning-line favorite for the race is Favorite Honey, trained by Monty Arrossa. Neither has started since the Governor’s Cup Futurity.
Overall, there are 48 horses in six 350-yard trials on Sunday, with the 10 fastest times, regardless of finishing positions, advancing to the final.
Several trial races have prominent runners.
Fg Jess Seis, eighth in the Kindergarten Futurity on May 16, will be favored in the first division, the evening’s fifth race.
Fg Jess Jeis is owned by the Dutch Masters III partnership that owns Jess Savin Candy, who missed a sweep of the Ruidoso Triple Crown for 2-year-olds with a fourth-place finish in the $3 million All American Futurity on Labor Day.
The promising gelding Mookkie, an allowance race winner at 330 yards on July 25, and Hitters Count, who won the minor Fred Scane Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at 350 yards on June 19, are the leading runners in the sixth race.
Run by Your Cartel, sixth in the Ed Burke Million Futurity on June 20, will be a slight favorite in the seventh race over Corona Yo, who has won two of three starts for trainer Roman Figueroa.
In the eighth race, Race Thru the Fire looks to hold an advantage. Race Thru the Fire won a division of the California Breeders’ Freshman Stakes at 350 yards on Aug. 1 for trainer Mike Casselman.
