Pacific Classic top two work, pointing to same next race

DEL MAR, Calif. - Tripoli and Tizamagician, the one-two finishers in the Pacific Classic, both worked a half-mile on Monday at Del Mar and got identical times of 48.80 seconds.
Both are candidates for the Grade 1, $300,000 Awesome Again at Santa Anita on Oct. 2.
Tripoli, trained by John Sadler, earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Classic Nov. 6 at Del Mar owing to his Pacific Classic victory.
Tizamagician, trained by Richard Mandella, has proven effective at longer distances, and could have the Grade 2, $250,000 Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes at 1 5/8 miles on Nov. 6 as an option Breeders’ Cup weekend.
Mandella on Tuesday worked Forbidden Kingdom, a debut 2-year-old winner last month at Del Mar, five furlongs in 59.20 seconds, equaling the fastest of 13 at the distance. He is a candidate for the Grade 1, $300,000 American Pharoah on Oct. 1 at Santa Anita.
Harvest Moon, fourth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, worked five furlongs on Monday in 1:01 for trainer Simon Callaghan in preparation for a comeback to defend her title in the Grade 2, $200,000 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 3. Harvest Moon has not raced since April 24, when third in the Grade 2 Santa Margarita.

Lieutenant Dan, who has emerged as the best turf sprinter on the West Coast, worked four furlongs in 51 seconds on Monday for trainer Steve Miyadi. Winner of the Grade 3 Green Flash Handicap in his last start, he could make his next start in the Grade 2, $200,000 Eddie D. Stakes on Oct. 1 at Santa Anita.
