A P Is Loose, Some Say So do it again in turf stakes

Marcus Hersh|Jul 04, 2018
A P Is Loose
Coady Photography/Canterbury Park A P Is Loose, ridden by Jareth Loveberry, wins the Blair's Cove Stakes for a third time on Tuesday.

Some Say So won the $50,000 Princess Elaine Stakes on Tuesday at Canterbury Park for the second year in a row, but a little less than two hours later A P Is Loose trumped that.

A P Is Loose won the $50,000 Blair’s Cove Stakes by a half-length, his third win in this Minnesota-bred turf race. A P Is Loose, a 7-year-old, won the 2015 and 2016 editions before finishing second last year. The horse who beat him in 2017, Teddy Time, finished second by a half-length Tuesday night. Mac Robertson trains both of them as well as fourth-place Hotshot Kid, the 3-2 favorite who failed to transfer his dirt form to turf and checked in 1 ½ lengths behind third-place Where’s Jordan.

Where’s Jordan on the far outside and Teddy Time just inside made belated runs in tandem, but while they finished fastest, A P Is Loose’s positional speed got him first run on fading upper-stretch leader Fireman Oscar - and got him to the wire first.

Under Jareth Loveberry, A P Is Loose stopped the timer in 1:42.92 for 1 1/16 miles on firm turf and paid $7.60 to win. Robertson trains the gelding for his breeder, Joel Zamzow, and A P Is Loose – by Monarchos out of the Stalwart mare, Masquerade Star – went over $400,000 in career earnings while posting his 10th victory from 33 starts.

Some Say So hasn’t reached that level of accomplishment but has made a good enough living over the Canterbury turf course, where her record now stands at 11-4-6-0. Some Say So led all the way winning the 2017 Princess Elaine, but on Tuesday took up a three-wide pressing position under Leandro Goncalves before moving sharply to the lead past the three-furlong pole. First Hunter, the 9-5 favorite, took a little run but never really closed on Some Say So, who was home by one length for a repeat in this filly-and-mare Minnesota-bred grass stakes.

Some Say So was timed in 1:43.34 for the 1 1/16 miles and paid $6.20 to win. Judd Becker trains her for Tim Rosin and Mark Kane, who bred the 5-year-old mare with Jerry Miller. Some Say So is by Belong to Me out of Love Factor, by Royal Academy.
