Owlette takes them all the way in Shady Well Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Owlette, a Kentucky shipper trained by Wesley Ward, went straight to the front and kept on going to land her first stakes in Saturday’s $125,000 Shady Well at Woodbine.
Owlette ($6.30) had won her maiden here in her previous start under Patrick Husbands, who had the mount again in the Shady Well. Take Charge Eh hounded her throughout most of the 5 1/2-furlong dash for 2-year-old fillies, before she held on to prevail by a half-length in a time of 1:04.42.

Curlin’s Voyage, the 8-5 favorite, outfinished Wake Up Maggie for third in the five-horse field of Ontario-breds. West Paw trailed, and Avie’s Samurai was scratched.
“The last time when I rode her, it was just a steer-job,” Husbands recalled. “She showed me today that she was the best. Every time I got a length in front, she put her ears up and quit running. It was good that [Take Charge Eh] pushed me along, and she got the job done.”
Owlette is the first stakes winner for Ontario freshman sire Frac Daddy. She earned $75,000 for owner David Mowat.
