Oviatt Class, third in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 1, has been sidelined with an injury that will keep him out of the major races for 3-year-olds in coming months. “He hurt his hock coming out of the Sham,” trainer Keith Desormeaux said Thursday. “He’ll be out for four months and that takes us out of the Triple Crown. We’ll have a nice horse for the fall.” Owned by James Downey, Oviatt Class ran in Grade 1 races in his final two starts of 2021 – a third in the American Pharoah Stakes at Santa Anita in October and a fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar in November. In the Sham Stakes at a mile, Oviatt Class closed from last of five into a slow pace to finish 2 3/4 lengths behind the undefeated winner Newgrange, who returned to win the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Jan. 29. :: Win big at Santa Anita: Get DRF Past Performances, Picks, Clocker Reports and Betting Strategies.  Desormeaux said that Oviatt Class has been moved to a farm in San Diego County until the spring.
