An overflow field of 13 3-year-olds – 12 may start – were entered for the $175,000 John Battaglia Memorial on Feb. 21 at Turfway, a Kentucky Derby points race. The main body of the field is headed by Street Beast, winner of the one-mile Leonatus Stakes last month at Turfway. Runner-up Fulleffort also returns. The 1 1/16-mile Battaglia, which awards Derby points on a 20-10-6-4-2 basis, is the local prep toward the Grade 3, $777,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks on March 21, which awards points on a scale of 100-50-25-15-10. One night prior to the Battaglia, a field of 11 3-year-old fillies will go in the $175,000 Cincinnati Trophy, which awards points toward the Kentucky Oaks on a 20-10-6-4-2 scale. The race leads to the $300,000 Bourbonette Oaks on the marquee March 21 card, with points on a 50-25-15-10-5 basis. The Cincinnati Trophy field is headed by unbeaten Map of the Moon, most recently winner of the Gowell in January at Turfway, and Coco Connect, who would be wheeling back after winning the Valdale locally on Feb. 7. Both are stretching out from their respective sprint wins to a mile. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
