ARCADIA, Calif. -- Overcoming a stumble at the start, Lord Bullingdon rallied past five rivals in the stretch to record an upset win in the $150,500 Qatar Golden Mile on turf for 2-year-olds, the first race on Friday’s Breeders’ Cup program at Santa Anita.
Ridden for the first time by Umberto Rispoli, Lord Bullingdon ($15.60) closed with a wide rush to reach the front with a furlong remaining. Lord Bullingdon pulled away to win by 3 3/4 lengths over 9-5 favorite Go With Gusto.
“I took him to the outside and he did it pretty easy,” Rispoli said. “I think he can run even farther.”
Lord Bullingdon (74 Beyer Speed Figure) was timed in 1:34.85. The victory was the colt’s first in his fourth start.

Go With Gusto, who failed to draw into the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf on Friday, raced behind horses entering the stretch, and failed to accelerate sufficiently to stay with Lord Bullingdon in the final furlong.
“Turning for home, she stayed the same speed,” said Joel Rosario, who rode Go With Gusto. “I was second best. She still tried hard.”
Mo Fox Givin, who also failed to draw into the Juvenile Fillies Turf, finished third, followed by Uncharted, Ace of Clubs, and Ultra Power.
Go With Gusto and Mo Fix Givin were the only fillies in the field. Asean, who drew into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, and Charge for Gold were withdrawn.
Lord Bullingdon, a colt by Lord Nelson, races for Colbart Stables and trainer Michael McCarthy. Lord Bullingdon has earned $120,220.
Lord Bullingdon was second to Breeders’ Cup runners in his first two starts. He was beaten eight lengths in a five-furlong maiden race at Los Alamitos on July 9, finishing well behind Prince of Monaco, who starts in Friday’s BC Juvenile.
Lord Bullingdon was second by 2 1/4 lengths to stablemate Endlessly in the Grade 3 Del Mar Juvenile Turf on Sept. 10 despite being steadied on the turn. Endlessly is entered in Friday’s BC Juvenile Turf.
In his most recent start, Lord Bullingdon was fifth as the 9-5 favorite in a maiden race on Oct. 7, racing in traffic with three furlongs remaining.
