Wesley Ward on Friday completed a sweep of the 2-year-old stakes at Belmont Park this week when Overbore rallied from off the pace to defeat three other juveniles in the $150,000 Tremont at 5 1/2 furlongs. A Speightstown colt owned by Peter Leidel and ridden by Joel Rosario, Overbore was pinched back a bit leaving the gate, but soon found a comfortable position tracking a hot pace duel between Baytown Frosty and Trust Our Journey. Turning for home, the pacesetters began to tire from enervating early fractions of 21.99 and 45.58 seconds, and the favorite swept around them on the outside. Overbore completed the distance in 1:05.44 over the muddy track and returned $3.30. Kavod rallied inside the winner to finish three-quarters of a length back in second. Trust Our Journey was 2 1/2 lengths farther back in third. Little Drama, the Tremont odds-on morning-line favorite, was scratched. Terry Finley, CEO of West Point Thoroughbreds, the group that owns the horse in partnership, said Little Drama was treated after displaying signs of colic. Rising Outlaw also was withdrawn on Friday morning. Overbore was originally purchased with the intention to send Ward and Leidel back to Royal Ascot, where they enjoyed success with Lady Aurelia in 2016. Ward mentioned the Grade 2, $400,000 Saratoga Special on Aug. 14 as a potential next start for Overbore. “Today, he was able to come back on short rest, ship all the way there, and it was a really nice race. We’re going to give him a little time and aim for the Saratoga Special.” “Perfect trip,” Rosario said in the winner’s circle. “He broke a little better than at Keeneland before and I expected that maybe he’d show a bit more speed, but those two horses got away a little bit. It looked like it set up nicely and he got the job done.” Kavod was making his first start since winning the first 2-year-old race in New York this year on April 23. He tried hard in the stretch. “I thought he ran very well,” said jockey Manny Franco. “He was second best today.” Ward won Thursday’s $150,000 Astoria for juvenile fillies with heavily favored Happy Soul, a Runhappy filly that scored by 11 1/2 lengths and received an 81 Beyer Speed Figure.
