'Overboard' has twice the edge

Dale Omenson|Sep 06, 2001

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Swept Overboard, who has been racing well versus the top sprinters in Southern California, looks like a standout when he heads a field of four in the Grade 3, $150,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint on Saturday.

Among Swept Overboard's three foes is Lexicon, who won this race last year and is coming off a solid effort in classified allowance company at Del Mar. But the others, Riotous Richie and You and You Alone, seem badly overmatched.

Swept Overboard stands out on both class and speed figures. In his last two starts, he has finished third to Kona Gold and Caller One in the Grade 2 Bing Crosby Breeders' Cup Handicap and second to El Corredor in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Handicap, both at Del Mar. Swept Overboard's earned Beyer Speed Figures of 116 in both those races.

Before those races, Swept Overboard, a 4-year-old son of End Sweep, won the Robert Kerlan Memorial Handicap on the Hollywood Park turf, posting a Beyer Figure of 107. He has only run 11 times, and has posted a Beyer of 102 or better in his last 10 starts (for the record, he got a 99 in his debut).

Lexicon can compete with Swept Overboard on his best day, and he has already shown that he likes this track, while Swept Overboard has never run here. Lexicon was given a Beyer Figure of 105 when he won this race last year, defeating runner-up Men's Exclusive by two lengths in 1:09.

The 6-year-old Swept Overboard, however, has been an in-and-outer lately, finishing far back in three of his last eight starts. Also during that eight-race span, he won the Paumonok at Aqueduct with a Beyer of 106, and missed by a neck to Stormy Jack in the classified allowance at Del Mar with a 100 Beyer.

The veteran, who is trained by Richard Mandella, has a career-best Beyer of 121.

Neither Riotous Richie nor You and You Alone has ever earned a Beyer Figure higher than 90. Riotous Richie, from the Jerry Hollendorfer barn, has not started since February, when he won a second-level allowance race at Golden Gate

You and You Alone, trained by Clifford Delima, last raced on June 30, when he finished fifth in the Whiting Memorial Handicap at Pleasanton.
