ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Saratoga shipper Outlaw Kid proved to be a punctual choice in Saturday's $150,000 Vice Regent Stakes at Woodbine, under a well-timed ride from Kazushi Kimura.
Outlaw Kid ($3.80) took up the chase in fourth along the rail on the turn in the five-furlong inner turf dash, as Silent Reserve set a quick pace, with Aim for the Sky and Rockcrest nearby.
Kimura angled Outlaw Kid outside for the drive, and they collared Silent Reserve in deep stretch to score by a neck, in a time of :56.20.
Mason’s Gamble closed to finish another three-quarters of a length back in third. Warp Ride edged out Rockcrest for fourth in the eight-horse field of Ontario-breds.
Trained by George Weaver, Outlaw Kid was competing on short rest off a fourth-place finish in an allowance/optional claimer at the Spa. He finished sixth after getting softened up in a speed duel in the Grade 2 Highlander here July 1.
“He’s obviously a nice horse,” Kimura said. “I just followed the instructions from the trainer. I was sitting back and stalking nicely, and then made one move. He was ready to go when I swung him out. I was confident.”
A gelded son of Violence, Outlaw Kid banked $90,000 in his first stakes victory for R A Hill Stable and SVG Thoroughbreds.
