Our Pedroia, Laila's Jazz meet in allowance sprint Monday
A pair of 4-year-old colts whose early careers included one stakes victory and a near miss in a $125,000 stakes renew acquaintances in one of two allowance races on Monday’s card at Finger Lakes.
Our Pedroia, who won the six-furlong Curlin Stakes as a maiden in his second career start in September 2012, and Laila’s Jazz, beaten a nose in a New York Stallion Series stakes in November 2012, are among nine runners in a six-furlong allowance for non-winners of four races lifetime. It goes as race 7 at 3:52 p.m. Eastern.
Our Pedroia and Laila’s Jazz were both in the Bertram Bongard Stakes in the fall of 2012 at Belmont Park. This will be their first meeting since then. Both are making their second start off a long layoff following a third-place finish in their 2014 debuts.
Our Pedroia overcame getting bumped at the start of a 5 1/2-furlong race June 7 to rally from sixth and be beaten four lengths. He has lost six straight since winning a non-winners-of-three allowance last September.
Laila’s Jazz returned from a year’s absence to get third by a nose, beaten six lengths by Meet the Mets, on May 23. Meet the Mets returned to finish second June 17 with a strong 75 Beyer Speed Figure.
Laila’s Jazz, part of an uncoupled entry for leading trainer Chris Englehart, has a strong angle in his favor. Accordng to DRF ’s Formulator, Englehart is 25 for 56 (45 percent) at Finger Lakes with sprinters making their second start off a layoff in an allowance.
The field also includes a trio of last-out winners in Chief Gaga, Reggie D, and Dancer’s Rocket.

Whitley enters Hall of Fame
Kevin Whitley, who recorded 2,627 of his 3,277 career riding victories locally, will be inducted Monday into the Finger Lakes Hall of Fame.
Whitley, who rode from 1975 to 2001, won five consecutive riding titles at Finger Lakes from 1986 to 1990. His 227 wins in 1982 established a track record that stood until 2000. On Aug. 27, 1989, Whitley won six races, including the $200,000 New York Derby with Packett’s Landing. That same year, he won the Grade 3 Finger Lakes Breeders’ Cup aboard Frattare.
