Our Flash Drive/Bessarabian Stakes
Julie Wright Our Flash Drive, with Patrick Husbands up, wins the Grade 2 Bessarabian Stake by 5 3/4 lengths.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Favored Our Flash Drive ran a corker on the turnback in Saturday’s Grade 2 Bessarabian at Woodbine, beating an accomplished field by 5 3/4 lengths under Patrick Husbands.

Our Flash Drive ($5.20) tracked the leading foursome of Sweet Enough, Hazelbrook, Lorena, and Loyalty on the turn in the seven-furlong sprint. Husbands angled her four wide for the drive, and she kicked away in the stretch to win in a quick time of 1:20.76, which was just .69 of a second off the synthetic-track record.

Hazelbrook edged out Loyalty for second while staking her claim for Canadian champion female sprinter honors. Awesome Treat, Beyond Mybudget, Artie’s Princess, Sweet Enough, Lorena, and Allworthy completed the order of finish.

Our Flash Drive had finished second in her previous outing going 1 1/16 miles in the Grade 3 Ontario Matron.

“I was getting a perfect trip down the backside,” Husbands said. “At the half-mile, I saw somebody slip to the rail. I was going to follow her, but [instead] I tipped out at the top of the lane.”

A daughter of Ghostzapper trained by Mark Casse, Our Flash Drive banked $105,000 of the $176,550 purse for Live Oak Plantation.

Maple Leaf Stakes

Il Malocchio ($20.40) notched her first victory of the year after an ideal trip in Saturday’s Grade 3, $171,300 Maple Leaf for fillies and mares.

Il Malocchio saved ground in fifth in the 1 1/4-mile route before wearing down Angelou and the favored pacesetter Transient in the stretch to prevail by a length over Angelou, in a time of 2:02.55.

Sahin Civaci rode the Marty Drexler-trained Il Malocchio, a daughter of Souper Speedy. She earned $108,000 for owner-breeder Franco Meli.

“She’s enjoying the cooler weather, for sure, and she had a couple of little setbacks in the summer,” Drexler said. “I thought she got the perfect trip today. She had some pace to run at. She saved ground, and the rail was good. It really set up for her.”
