Ouevre outsteps Dancin At Midnight in Powerless Stakes

Ouevre had to work a little bit to win her sixth race of 2022, but win she did, capturing the $75,000 Powerless Stakes by three quarters of a length over a stubborn Dancin At Midnight at Hawthorne.
Jareth Loveberry gave Oeuvre ($3) a perfect trip, stalking in third as Purr Sea and Dancin At Midnight volleyed for the lead through a modest pace, 23.08 and 45.04, in this sprint race for Illinois-bred fillies and mares. Loveberry began asking Oeuvre questions at the quarter pole and the filly responded, edging up to the lead pair, then wearing down Dancin at Midnight through the final furlong.
Purr Sea held third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Dancin At Midnight as the odds-on favorite, Oeuvre, clocked 1:16.63 for 6 1/2 furlongs over a fast dirt track.

Oeuvre, a homebred owned by Richard Perkins and trained by Chris Block, is by Shackleford out of Love This Kitten, by Kitten’s Joy. Though she is a 3-year-old and facing older horses, Oeuvre carried 122 pounds, same as 4-year-old Dancin at Midnight.
Oeuvre late this summer was a good closing third in the $471,000 Music City Stakes at Kentucky Downs, and she’d won her other five races this year – two on turf, three on dirt – by margins between 2 3/4 and six lengths. The Powerless proved more of a challenge, though Block believes the filly prefers turf to dirt, though Oeuvre has had an excellent multi-surface season.
