Barbara D. Livingston Jose Ortiz will be riding at Gulfstream Park, starting Wednesday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Jockey Jose Ortiz was the No. 1 star at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, winning five of the 11 races on the card, including the fourth event aboard the regally bred first-time starter Doll Baby.

On Saturday, Ortiz, who switched his tack back locally after beginning the winter in New York, guided Regal Glory to victory for trainer Chad Brown in the inaugural running of the $500,000 Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Invitational.

“I think being here the rest of the winter will help me find better horses down the road,” said Ortiz. “My family had a lot to do with me moving up there after riding here for the past four or five years. But I sat down with my wife and she said, ‘Go where you’ll be happy. We’ll make it work.’ ”

Doll Baby led throughout to win by one length going seven furlongs. A homebred by Tapit out of the champion mare Groupie Doll, Doll Baby is trained by Ralph Nicks for Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm. She is the fourth foal out of Groupie Doll to make the races and her third winner. A two time Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner, Groupie Doll closed out her amazing career winning the Grade 3 Hurricane Bertie here in 2014.

◗ The card Sunday featured a mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 pool, with the winning sequence returning $25,194.88. The Rainbow 6 had gone unsolved for 12 racing days and generated a carryover of $727,306 heading into Sunday, with an additional $5.34 million wagered into the pool, which spanned races 6-11.
