HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A trio of starter allowance/optional-claiming races – two on Tapeta, one on turf – close out the Thursday program at Gulfstream Park, a nine-race offering where just one race is carded for dirt. Race 7, at five furlongs on Tapeta, is for 3-year-old fillies who have started for a claiming price of $35,000 or less or are in for $35,000. This looks to be a two-horse affair between Art Show Lady, trained by Jose D’Angelo, and Warda, sent out by Eddie Plesa Jr. Art Show Lady won her debut last Oct. 28 by 6 1/2 lengths and was claimed by D’Angelo from Rohan Crichton for $35,000. In her next start on Jan. 4, Art Show Lady lost a head bob to Dr. Ray D. while finishing 3 1/4 lengths clear of the rest of the field. Three of the runners in Thursday’s race finished behind Art Show Lady in that spot. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Warda was beaten 25 lengths when finishing last in her debut last October on dirt. On Jan. 13, transferred to synthetic and with blinkers and Lasix added, Warda galloped to a front-running, eight-length victory earning a 72 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest among this race’s seven entrants. Warda may have to deal with some pace pressure from Laconia, who breaks from the rail and gets Lasix for the first time. Race 8 is for males, 4-year-olds and up, who have started for a tag of $35,000 or less or who are being offered for $50,000 and is scheduled for 5 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta. Trainer Joe Orseno sends out Extendo, who is coming off a second-place finish at 19-1 in the Janus Stakes here on turf Dec. 31. Orseno said Extendo was in that race to help out his other entrant, Eamonn, who finished a half-length back in third. Extendo is 5 for 7 over Gulfstream’s Tapeta surface. Two back, he finished third, behind next out winners Panther Island and Full Disclosure. Orseno said he wanted his horse on the lead that day but he didn’t make it. “This is a good spot for him,” Orseno said. Extendo may have to deal with some early pressure from Mamba On Three, who goes first off the claim for Fernando Abreu after finishing second behind Full Disclosure when offered for $50,000 on Jan. 4. Loco Abarrio returns to Tapeta – a surface over which he has three seconds from as many starts – after winning a second-level allowance on dirt on Dec. 24. Luis Saez was aboard that day, but Saez rides Extendo on Thursday so Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount on Loco Abarrio for Ronald Spatz. Race 9, for 3-year-olds who have started for a tag of $25,000 or less or are in for the optional $35,000 claiming price, is scheduled for one mile on turf. Orseno has the pair of Tapit Three Times and Roan, the former seemingly the horse to beat though he is making his first start on turf. Orseno claimed Tapit Three Times for $16,000 out of a winning effort on Nov. 3. After getting beat a head for starter $16,000, Tapit Three Times came back to clear that condition by 2 1/2 lengths on Jan. 6. Orseno was pointing to a first-level allowance before this race came up. “We’re thrilled with that horse, we think he’s got a big future,” Orseno said. “We do want to try the turf with him anyway, so this is a good spot to try the turf instead of the a-other-than.” Orseno said he also wants to try Roan on the turf, though he’s not sure how effective the horse will be going one mile. Hot N Lucky goes first off the claim for Saffie Joseph Jr., who took the son of Flameaway for $25,000 on Dec. 10, a day he won by 5 1/4 lengths. Echo Lane is coming off a win on turf for maiden $25,000 claiming. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
