Onyx Ten splits horses in stretch for Wide Country win
?q=100)
Onyx Ten spilt horses in the upper stretch under J.G. Torrealba and gradually edged away from Safe Trust to win the $100,000 Wide Country Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by one length. It was 1 1/4 lengths back to Icona Mama, the 7-5 favorite, in third.
It was the third victory in 10 starts for Onyx Ten, who last month won the Xtra Heat Stakes at Laurel.
Speaking of the Wide Country, trainer Gary Capuano told Laurel publicists that Torrealba “warmed her up good hoping she'd break sharp, which she did. It really worked out nice. She just got another great trip.
"The dirt hitting her doesn't faze her,” Capuano added. “For a young filly like that, she's all heart. She tries. She's a big, strong filly. Nothing seems to bother her."
Onyx Ten, a daughter of Street Magician, covered the seven furlongs in 1:25.82 and returned $8.20 as the 3-1 second choice.
