Onus will try to build on her course-record-setting 4-year-old debut in the $100,000 Perfect Sting Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday. The Perfect Sting, a one-mile race over the Widener turf, is carded as race 9 and will be immediately followed by the Grade 1 Mother Goose. A field of 13 was entered for the Perfect Sting but Stormy Victoria and Miss Ella were entered back in an optional race Sunday and will be scratched. Onus came to hand rapidly for trainer Shug McGaughey last summer, rattling off Laurel Park wins in maiden and allowance company before taking the Grade 3 Commonwealth Oaks at the Maryland track. Onus concluded her campaign with a ninth-place finish over “good” turf in the Grade 2 Mrs. Revere at Churchill Downs. “She was just a little banged up after the Mrs. Revere last year, so we just elected to give her some time for the winter,” McGaughey said. Onus set a 1 1/16-mile Widener-course record of 1:38.86 in her May 21 comeback race, leading all the way over four overmatched rivals. Although the Belmont turf was playing very quickly at that point in the meet, there is no doubt that Onus is fast. She previously set a 1 1/16-mile Laurel Park course record of 1:39.26 in her allowance win. The waters get deeper for Onus in the Perfect Sting as Cali Thirty Seven, My Sweet Girl, and Mississippi Delta all have speed. Onus has the ability to rate but should not be far back early. Perfect Sting, Race 8 Key Contenders Onus, by Blame Last 3 Beyers: 101-78-97 ◗ After Onus’s comeback win, McGaughey said she would be pointed to the Grade 1 Diana, with the Perfect Sting as an intermediate step. Notte d’Oro, by Medaglia d’Oro Last 3 Beyers: 90-88-88 ◗ She finished fourth in the seven-furlong Intercontinental in her last start for trainer Christophe Clement but that race may have been a little short for her. She was farther back than usual early and seemed to be finding her best stride at the wire. She was beaten only a half-length for second. ◗ Look for her to sit mid-pack early. She would benefit from a fast pace. DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 3 Notte d'Oro.
