Ontology recovering from injuries after claiming victory
DEL MAR, Calif. – Ontology, the former stakes horse who was vanned off after being promoted to first in a $20,000 claiming race Wednesday, was being treated at trainer Kristin Mulhall’s stable for sesamoid and suspensory injuries Thursday.
Mulhall said Thursday that Ontology will not undergo surgery and that “he’ll survive the injury.”
“The thing you have to worry about is founder,” she said. “So far, so good. He’s eating, and he’s comfortable.”
Mulhall said she claimed the 3-year-old Ontology as a stallion prospect on behalf of owner Farrohk Moshar.
By Tapit, Ontology has won 2 of 10 starts and earned $144,050. Purchased for $210,000 at the 2013 Ocala Breeders’ Sale Co. auction of 2-year-olds in training that March, Ontology ran in seven stakes for Paul and Zillah Reddam and trainer Simon Callaghan from July 2013 until January this year. His best results were second-place finishes in the Hollywood Juvenile Championship and Oak Tree Juvenile Turf and a third in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes in January.
Ontology did not start between the Sham Stakes and Wednesday’s $20,000 claimer, his first career appearance in a claiming race. Ontology finished second to Prince of Paris but was promoted to first after stewards Luis Jauregui, Kim Sawyer, and Vic Stauffer disqualified Prince of Paris for interference.
Stauffer, the former track announcer at Hollywood Park, is working as a steward this week on behalf of regular steward Scott Chaney.
