O'Neill high on 3-year-old maiden winners Tyfosha, Shane Zain

Trainer Doug O’Neill, who is 4 for 8 at this Oaklawn Park meet, had a double Sunday, when the 3-year-olds Tyfosha and Shane Zain won maiden special weight races. Both could see stakes action in the near future.
Tyfosha stalked the pace in Sunday’s sprint and scored by 4 1/4 lengths while making her first start since running second to eventual multiple Grade 1 winner Moonshine Memories in a Del Mar maiden race in August. Tyfosha earned an 80 Beyer Speed Figure on Sunday in her fourth career start.
“She’s a filly that we’ve always been optimistic about and excited about,” O’Neill said. “We had trouble getting over the hump, freshened her up, and brought her back and are very happy with the way she got it done. She has a bright future.”
O’Neill said the next race for Tyfosha could come in either the $125,000 Martha Washington on Feb. 10 or the Grade 3, $200,000 Honeybee on March 10. Both are two-turn races at Oaklawn.
“There are opportunities right there at Oaklawn, so the goal is to try to keep her there if we can,” O’Neill said. “The dream goal – and I really think she has a ton of talent – is the Kentucky Oaks.
“The Martha Washington is a possibility. She’s one that needs pretty good spacing. It was a good effort [Sunday]. I want to serve her the right way, give her plenty of time, and the Honeybee, the timing is more to my liking – plenty of time from” Sunday.
In either race, Tyfosha would be making her two-turn debut. She is a daughter of Flatter and the mare Penny Marie, a three-time stakes winner by Sky Classic.
“She’s always acted like the distance would benefit her,” O’Neill said. “You never know until they do it, but I think it will be her cup of tea.”
Tyfosha is owned Zedan Racing Stables, which also races Shane Zain, the front-running winner of a one-mile race Sunday. He could run next in the Grade 3, $500,000 Southwest on Feb. 19 at Oaklawn.
“If he’s doing well, it would be a good test for him,” O’Neill said. “He’s bred to be a good horse.”
Shane Zain is by Medaglia d’Oro and out of the Grade 2-winning mare My Gi Gi.
Tyfosha and Shane Zain are part of a division that the Southern California-based O’Neill has at Oaklawn for the first time this year. He ranked second in the standings through Wednesday.
◗ Flora Dora, who has been running in graded stakes in New York, makes her Oaklawn debut in Friday’s eighth race. The optional $40,000 claiming route is for fillies and mares at a mile. The field of 11 also includes Torrent, who was third last out in the Grade 2 Raven Run at Keeneland.
Flora Dora is a two-time stakes winner who will break from the rail. Channing Hill has the mount for Coffeepot Stables and trainer Wayne Catalano.
