One Timer backs up fast debut win by winning Victoria Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Heavily favored One Timer scored impressively to remain unbeaten in Saturday’s $127,000 Victoria Stakes at Woodbine.
With E. T. Baird aboard, One Timer outsprinted Feelthebeat for the lead in the 5 1/2-furlong test for 2-year-olds. One Timer began to draw off at the quarter pole, and was never threatened the rest of the way while getting home on top by 3 3/4 lengths in 1:03.33.
“I think he’s a really nice horse,” Baird said. “He broke good. The horse on the outside showed a lot of speed, but I wanted to keep [One Timer] in there. When we hit the middle of the turn, he had his ears pricked. He’s got a high cruising speed.”
One Timer returned $3.20 to win.

Twenty Four Mamba finished second, and Concealed Carry was a distant third in the seven-horse field. Mowins was scratched.
One Timer is based at Arlington with trainer Larry Rivelli, where he won his only other start by 12 ½ lengths against maidens. The son of Trappe Shot earned $75,000 Saturday for owners Richard Ravin and Patricia’s Hope LLC.
Diabolic wins My Dear
Diabolic took the $131,500 My Dear for fillies, the other juvenile stakes on the card, giving Spanish-born jockey Antonio Gallardo his first Woodbine stakes score.
Diabolic took up the chase near the leaders along the rail, and was angled wide in midstretch en route to a 2 1/4-length tally in 1:04.15 for the 5 ½ furlongs. Trained by Mark Casse, Diabolic paid $9.20.
Diabolic won a maiden sprint on the turf at Gulfstream in her only previous start. She rallied from fourth under Emisael Jaramillo in that race and won by a neck.
Gallardo said he learned about Diabolic by watching the replay of that race.
“I didn’t see myself being on the lead, or too close,” Gallardo said. “I watched the replay when she won with Jaramillo at Gulfstream. I could see she’s really smart. I wanted to be saving ground, follow the speed. She did everything perfectly. She followed the other horses. When I put her into the clear, I asked, and she gave me 100 percent. She’s a nice filly.”
First-time starter Curlin Candy edged out Royal Engagement for second in the eight-horse field. Lois Len, Diabolic’s stablemate, got wiped out at the break and finished fourth.
An Irish-bred by Dark Angel, Diabolic banked $75,000 for D. J. Stable and Nexus Racing Club.
