HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Bill Mott will have one proven commodity, one unknown quantity, and two pretty good chances to win Thursday’s $86,000 main event at Gulfstream Park when sending out Kapoor and Isla Grande in the six-furlong allowance and optional-claiming dash for older fillies and mares. Kapoor comes into the race having won her last two starts by a combined 9 1/4 lengths, with those victories coming nearly eight months apart. The first was last May in a maiden special weight event at Churchill Downs. The most recent came just four weeks ago, by five lengths, in a six-furlong allowance and optional claimer at Tampa Bay Downs. Isla Grande is far and away the least experienced member of the field and also it’s biggest mystery. She captured her one and only previous start by 10 lengths last spring in her native Argentina. “Kapoor has had some little issues and we had to give her plenty of time after her maiden win, but she’s come back really well,” Mott said. “We started her back at Tampa in what we thought was a pretty good spot, it worked out well, and she’s still eligible for a similar race here.” Taylor Kingsley, who was aboard Kapoor for her one-sided win at Tampa, has a return call Thursday. :: Get Gulfstream Park Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the Clocker Team. The pace should be honest, with the Mott duo expected to be forwardly placed along with likely favorite Chatter, who led most of the way before being run down by Lynn’s Milky Way when second best under similar conditions making her local debut Dec. 20. Lynn’s Milky Way flattered the race by returning to upset Mott’s odds-on Nic’s Style in a higher-priced optional-claiming and allowance test five weeks later. Chatter, who was making her first start for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. in her 3-year-old finale, earned a career-topping 86 Beyer Speed Figure in defeat and has not missed a beat in the morning training up to her 2026 debut. The potential for a contested pace could prove an advantage for Kentucky invader Merry Madison, who rallied from just off the pace to win her maiden under a $100,000 claiming tag last fall at Churchill. She figures to attract plenty of parimutuel support with regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr. again taking the call. Arami’s Factor, Royal Poppy, and Rock the Rainbow complete the lineup. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
