One Minute gets class relief in Colleen

The eight entrants in the $60,000 Colleen Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sunday are coming from many different directions.

One Minute, trained in New York by Steve Asmussen, will get class relief in the five-furlong turf race for 2-year-old fillies. Trainer Wesley Ward thought highly enough of Ruby Notion to take her to Royal Ascot, where she finished fifth against males in a 27-horse field. And Rosebud’s Tiger has shipped in from Gulfstream Park after a failed stakes try on the Summit of Speed card and now is in the barn of leading Monmouth trainer Jorge Navarro.

Five of the runners will be making their turf debuts, and let’s not forget that the male counterpart to the Colleen, the Tyro Stakes, was won last Sunday by first-time starter Expected Ruler, who paid $96 as the longest shot in the field.

Key contenders

Ruby Notion (Last Beyer: 48)

* West Virginia homebred was much the best in winning her debut for a $40,000 claiming price at Churchill Downs.

* Opened a long early lead when fifth in the $93,000 Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot and was beaten less than four lengths while defeating 22 rivals.

One Minute (Last 3 Beyers: 49-0-52)

* In three starts following a private purchase, she has run in the Grade 2 Schuylerville, the $125,000 My Dear over Polytrack at Woodbine, and the $225,000 Tempted at Belmont. Faces easier here in her first turf start.

* Overcame traffic troubles to win her maiden at Churchill four starts back, but her three rivals that day are a combined 0 for 9 since.

Tight Weave (Last Beyer: 52)

* A $50,000 2-year-old buy at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. in April, she won her debut at Penn National by a head for Todd Beattie. Jadyn’s G G, who was second-best, returned to finish third to runaway debut winner Bold Quality – a daughter of Elusive Quality trained by Kelly Breen – in a Parx maiden race.

Rosebud’s Tiger (Last 2 Beyers: 15-50)

* Tired to finish eighth in the Cassidy Stakes at Gulfstream but may have been facing tougher. The Cassidy was Ballet Diva’s second easy win in a row, and third-place finisher It’s High Time came back to upset Ballet Diva in last Saturday’s Desert Vixen, a Florida Stallion Series stakes.

Silver Majorette (Last 2 Beyers: 49-36)

* Patricia Generazio homebred won a $50,000 New Jersey-bred maiden race as the 7-10 favorite while making her second career start for Terri Pompay on Aug. 7.

Wolfie (Last 2 Beyers: 37-33)

* Finished third to R C’s Daisyduke in the $50,000 White Clay Stakes at Delaware after winning her debut in a $40,000 maiden-claiming race at Monmouth. R C’s Daisyduke has won both of her starts for Steven Krebs by wide margins, including a Charles Town maiden race.
